Each photography umbrella configuration has distinct optical output and a different set of OEM specification variables. Here is what you can specify for each type:
High output, moderate softness. Most common first SKU for a new lighting brand. OEM variables: canopy diameter (32-60 inch), rib count (8 or 16), rib material (steel or fibreglass), silver coating method (laminate or vapour deposition), outer canopy (black 160-170 GSM), shaft (8mm diameter, 60-65cm length).
Critical: ISO 2409 Grade 0-1 silver coating adhesion test required with PPS.
Matte white interior. Medium output, high softness. OEM variables same as silver reflective except interior coating: matte white 160-170 GSM interior fabric. Positions as the soft-portrait option in your range.
Gold metallic laminate interior. Produces warm-shifted light (~4,000-4,500K vs 5,500K daylight). A specialty SKU rather than a launch product. Market the warm shift accurately — it is significant at approximately 1,500K.
Light passes through the fabric. The umbrella becomes a very large, soft light source. OEM variables: white or off-white translucent polyester 150-160 GSM, transmission rate 80-92%. Different use case from reflective — position separately in your range.
Silver reflective coatings delaminate. The failure starts at canopy panel corners and rib-tip attachment points — the areas most stressed during folding and opening. The root cause is almost always insufficient adhesion between the metallic laminate and the polyester base fabric.
The review failure pattern: “Peeling” or “flaking” mentioned within 6-12 months. This is the single most common photography umbrella negative review. Without the adhesion specification, it is a predictable outcome.

The most common mistake when launching a photography umbrella OEM product line: specifying the outcome (“silver reflective, looks like competitors”) rather than the process (“silver laminate adhesion test: ISO 2409 Grade 0-1”). The process specification is what determines the outcome.
Photography umbrella manufacturing is an extremely narrow category. Most standard umbrella factories do not produce photography umbrellas at all. 100 units per SKU (size and diffusion type combination) for standard specifications using existing tooling. For custom tooling (unique canopy diameter or shaft configuration): 200-500 units depending on the tooling investment. A new brand launching two SKUs (43-inch silver reflective and 43-inch white translucent) can start with 200 units total at 100 units per SKU.
Bowens S-mount is the de facto standard for studio strobe accessories. Photography umbrellas need an 8mm diameter shaft to fit the Bowens umbrella receptacle. Any photography umbrella intended for studio strobe use should specify 8mm shaft diameter explicitly in the tech pack — it is not automatically guaranteed from all manufacturers.
Silver reflective coating delamination is caused by insufficient adhesion between the metallic laminate and the polyester base fabric — typically from inadequate surface preparation before the coating was applied. The fix: specify ISO 2409 Grade 0-1 cross-cut tape adhesion test in the purchase order. This adds approximately £0.15-£0.20 per unit in testing cost and eliminates the most common failure mode in the photography umbrella category.
